Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my cards?

In Chickadee, go to Settings → Data → Back up now. You get one .zip file with all your decks, cards, recordings, pictures and study history; on a phone the share sheet opens so you can save it to Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or email it to yourself. To bring it back, use Settings → Data → Restore from backup. Chickadee keeps your cards on your device, so a regular backup is the best protection if you lose or reset your phone.

How do I export a single deck?

Open the deck and tap Export deck. Choose Package (.zip, with media) to move it to another device or share it, or CSV to open it in a spreadsheet or another flashcard app.

Is there a cloud backup?

With Premium, sign in under Settings → Account and turn on sync. Your decks and study history are then kept in your account and synced between your devices. Without an account, nothing leaves your device.

How do I restore my purchase on a new phone?

Go to Settings → Upgrade and tap Restore Purchases at the bottom. Use the same Apple ID (iPhone and iPad) or Google account (Android) you bought with. If you bought Premium on our website, sign in with the same email address under Settings → Account instead.

How do I cancel or change my subscription?

Settings → Subscription → Manage subscription. App Store and Google Play subscriptions are managed in your Apple ID or Google Play settings; web subscriptions open the payment page where you can change your plan, update your card or cancel. You keep Premium until the end of the period you paid for.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. Without the app, email us from your account’s address. Details, including what is deleted, are on the Delete your account page.

I didn’t get the sign-in email.

Check your spam or junk folder and that the address is spelled right, then ask for a new one. In the iPhone or Android app, type the 6-digit code from the email instead of opening the link.

The app can’t use the microphone or camera.

If you said no when Chickadee asked, the system won’t ask again. Tap Open Settings in the app (or open your phone’s Settings → Apps → Chickadee) and turn on Microphone or Camera. You can always choose a picture from your photo library instead.

Cards aren’t read aloud, or the voice sounds wrong.

Read-aloud uses your device’s own voices. On iPhone, add better voices in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices. On Android, install the language in Settings → System → Languages → Text-to-speech output (Speech Services by Google). Starter decks with recorded audio play their clips instead, even with the silent switch on.

A starter deck has a mistake.

On the study screen, tap ••• → Report a problem (or the flag next to the card in the card list). Reports from signed-in users reach us; we fix the card in the next deck update.
